God is Close to Us; Are We Far From Him? (#540, 22nd Sunday)

Fr. Joel Homilies 2 Comments

Ordinary Time, 22nd Sunday. God is close to us in the Eucharist. Are we close to Him? We have to stay rooted in Christ in order to find the peace, joy, and meaning that we are looking for. But how do we stay rooted in Christ when he doesn’t seem to be listening? The truth is that God is often speaking and communicating with us, and we are the ones who are too busy and distracted to listen. God is with you here in Church; God will be with you the rest of the week. But will you be with him?

Point to Ponder: Is my prayer about my relationship with God, or about getting my prayers in?

Point to Discuss: Talk to a friend about a time prayer was answered for you.

I have talked with God in many ways. I honestly do not always feel like I get a reply from him. Life is exhausting, I don’t always find a time to pray. But when I ride my bike I converse easily with God. Sometimes he answers me. I don’t know if there is a right way or wrong way, but I believe I am answered when I ride my bike. It is hard to know if I am doing enough. Everyone around me tells me I am not doing enough. But I feel good with my relationship to God.

      Dear Twilla,
God doesn’t always answer me right away either, but sooner or later I get a response. The bigger things God answers in ways that take a while for him to set up and deliver. Perhaps you notice his responses more when you are riding your bike because you are more relaxed and not necessarily looking for an immediate answer. Sometimes prayer is about relaxing into God’s presence more than the words we say. He surrounds us with His love and mercy in a way that is hard to grasp and truly appreciate. Blessings on your ride with the Lord.
