A Blood Transfusion for my Brother Omar (#633, 12th Sunday)

Fr. Joel Homilies

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C) · My brother Omar killed my brothers and sisters in the Pulse nightclub. We need more than a change of law; we need a change of heart. Jesus offers us a blood transfusion. Jesus lives and dies on the firm foundation of His Father’s love. If you have the blood of Jesus in your veins, you too can respond to evil with the Works of Mercy.

Point to Ponder: Spend a little time with The Washington Post’s excellent article The Math of Mass Shootings. Pray for the victims. And the shooters.

Point to Discuss: Why do you think there are mass shootings? Talk to a friend about what you think is behind this phenomenon.

Point to Live: Do a Work of Mercy this week.

Spiritual Works of Mercy

Admonish the sinner.
Instruct the ignorant.
Counsel the doubtful.
Comfort the sorrowful.
Bear wrongs patiently.
Forgive offenses.
Pray for the living and dead.

Corporal Works
of Mercy

Feed the hungry.
Give drink to the thirsty.
Clothe the naked.
Welcome the stranger.
Care for the sick.
Visit the imprisoned.
Bury the dead.
